FPG provides ITERS-3 training for new staff and reliability checks for trained ITERS-3 observers.  Visits are conducted at Educare schools during the National Evaluation data collection window (October – March). 

The trainer and trainee(s) develop consensus scores during debriefing.  These scores are used as data for the National Evaluation. Some programs prefer that the scores from the training/reliability observations not be used as data for the National Evaluation or program improvement.  In those cases, the LEP is free to return to the classroom later to conduct an additional observation.

In the late summer or early fall, FPG will reach out to sites due for reliability checks to begin scheduling.  Any LEP with new staff who need training should reach out to FPG as soon as possible. 

If the ITERS observation is completed by someone other than an evaluator who is part of an LEP/NEP team, assurances must be provided that the observer is independent from the operation/educational services of the classroom.  Examples where this provision has been met are outside observers who are part of state QISs or trained staff from the Educare agencies who do not play a direct role in overseeing or providing educational services.  

New Observers

Prior to the training visit, new ITERS-3 observers will be required to:

• read the entire ITERS-3 scale, print the supplemental materials, and add the additional notes for clarification to each item as needed.  Visit ersi.info for more information. 
• take the Environmental Rating Scales Institute online course to introduce them to the ITERS-3 scale and the scoring procedures.  Visit ersi.info for more information. 
• conduct a practice observation (in a non-Educare classroom).
