Mastering the PLS-5 can be a lengthy process.  Assessors must read instructions and questions verbatim, transition smoothly between the easel and other materials presented to children, learn how to quickly determine if a basal and ceiling have been established, and learn when to discontinue administering the sub-parts of a question (because the minimum number of correct answers to score the item correct HAS BEEN reached or CAN NO LONGER be reached).  New assessors should expect to spend time practicing with an adult partner several times before practicing with young children.  

Each assessor who will collect PLS-5 data should submit a video of themselves conducting an entire assessment with a child.  The video should show the assessor establishing a rapport with the child prior to beginning the assessment.  Please identify a quiet setting, free from distractions and with child-sized furniture.  Make sure you review our Site Review form and Video Queue process for important guidance and instructions on the video submission process (see section B of the Study Tools and Forms tile on the Team Member Dashboard).
